The Delaware Art Museum is seeking applicants for its Museum Educator Program, a year-long professional opportunity designed to provide hands-on experience in museum education and public programming.
The program offers participants the chance to work closely with museum staff while developing practical skills in curriculum design, gallery teaching and community outreach. Museum Educators collaborate with one another and with staff in the museum’s Art & Learning Department to lead tours, facilitate educational programming and contribute to special projects and partnerships that support the museum’s educational mission.
The position is designed for individuals looking to build a foundation for a career in museums, including recent graduates, those taking a gap year, or individuals newly entering the museum field.
The role is a part-time contract position lasting 12 to 13 months, beginning in late spring 2026 and concluding in early summer 2027. Museum Educators will be paid $20 per hour.
Museum Educators will lead in-gallery tours of the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions for adult and student audiences ranging from Pre-K through college level. Educators will also travel to schools across Delaware to facilitate classroom visits and educational activities.
Additional responsibilities include collaborating with fellow educators and staff to develop and revise curriculum for rotating exhibitions, participating in weekly in-service sessions, maintaining educational materials and tour aids, and assisting with select museum events.
Educators will also support programs such as Teacher Appreciation Night and student art exhibitions, typically requiring five to six evening shifts each year.
The regular weekly schedule includes Thursday morning school tours from 8:30 a.m. to noon, followed by an in-service session from 1 to 3 p.m. Educators may also lead additional tours throughout the week, conduct scheduled classroom visits, and work occasional weekend shifts when needed.
Monthly hours will not exceed 50 hours, though educators are encouraged to take on two to three additional tours per week beyond required commitments.
The museum is seeking applicants with a background or strong interest in art, education, art history, or related fields, along with an interest in engaging audiences of diverse ages, backgrounds and abilities. Successful candidates should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Applicants must also have reliable transportation and be able to travel throughout Delaware for school visits and outreach programs.
Additional qualifications that are considered beneficial but not required include Spanish language proficiency, experience writing curricula or lesson plans, familiarity with diversity and inclusion practices in education, studio art experience and knowledge of the museum’s collection areas, which include Pre-Raphaelite art, American illustration and American art from 1960 to the present.
The museum also welcomes candidates with experience working with English Language Learners or those interested in trauma-informed or anti-bias educational approaches.
The Delaware Art Museum encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply. Museum officials note that candidates do not need to meet every qualification listed to be considered and emphasize the institution’s commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive and welcoming workplace.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume by email. Interviews will begin once qualified applicants are identified, and the position will remain open until it has been filled.
The Delaware Art Museum is an equal opportunity employer and encourages qualified candidates from all cultures and communities to apply.
