The Cured Plate, which opened in Milford in February 2024, has become a popular, unique dining experience. Originally focused on charcuterie, the owners say that the restaurant has evolved. Last week, they announced a name change to “The Black Sheep.”
“After much deliberation and careful consideration, The Cured Plate-Libations & Lounge has become Black Sheep.
Our original name naturally leaned toward cheese and charcuterie. While we will always offer custom-curated boards within our walls, that is no longer the stronghold of who we are” says Liz Klingensmith, owner and chef. “We’ve grown and evolved over these two years, and our name and branding needed to reflect the full experience we’ve worked so hard to build.”
A black sheep represents the outcast, the one daring to be different and the underdog, Klingensmith explained.
“That’s us. It always has been,” she said. “We embrace it, and truthfully, it’s the fuel that drives us to break molds, escape the ordinary and win awards.”
The restaurant was named a finalist in the elimination rounds of the Best of Delaware. They were also chosen featured in Back of the House, a film celebrating the best of Delaware’s culinary community.
“Change isn’t something we take lightly,” a post announcing the name change read. “After learning some time ago that a name change would be necessary, and sitting with that decision longer than most, we’ve decided it’s time.”
The slogan for the restaurant is “Delaware Eats” as it was founded in Delaware and it is staying in Delaware.
“Food is what we do, simple as that,” Klingensmith said. “We are also using “Behind the Password” as from the very beginning we have been a timeless, era-replicated speakeasy. Our ambiance, our mystery, our soul – this is what captivates. During Prohibition, a password was required to enter those illegal establishments, and it has always been a part of arriving here. Behind the Password speaks to the secrecy, the intrigue and the era that shaped our foundation.”
The announcement post made it clear that ownership was not changing nor were the chefs behind the food now labeled Delaware Eats.
“Who we are isn’t changing. What we do here isn’t changing. Our OG employees aren’t changing,” the post read. “This is simply a name that better reflects our brand, the experience, the story we’ve been trying to tell all along.”
The post hinted at a possible location change but did not reveal any details other than it would be bigger and better.
