Wednesday night, Milford hosted Cape Henlopen for a special night of wrestling. Besides boys, girls and junior varsity, it was also a night of fundraising for “Morgan’s Message”. The organization, founded in the memory of Morgan Rodgers, an athlete who sadly took her own life. Rodgers as a result faced physical and mental challenges, something many athletes face and felt she had little support to deal with them. To learn more about the organization, mission and resources available please visit Morgan’s Message to understand how you can help someone in need or find help if you or someone you know needs it.
BOYS:
Cape Henlopen would emerge victorious with a score of 42-35. The match was fast paced with Milford freshman taking the opening match by fall at 106 pounds. What followed over the next few matches was not what the Buccaneer faithful were hoping for as Cape would take the next five matches, three by fall and two by forfeit. With Cape in control, Milford was able to briefly stop the bleeding as freshman Dometrius Dorell would win by decision at 144 pounds.
Cape would rebound quickly as they would take the next three matches by fall, including on technical as the Vikings stretched their advantage to 40-9 in what seemed like a blink of an eye. Milford would run the table as senior Devon Dallas would win by technical fall at 165 pounds. That would be followed by Parker Abraham and Riley Carmean winning by fall at 175 and 190 pounds respectively.
Milford would continue its run the rest of the way as sophomore Ryan Collingsworth would win by a 10-4 decision at 215 pounds. Senior Greg Lockett would close out the evening with a win by fall at 285 pounds. Speaking about the meet, Milford coach Don Parsley had this to say.
“Having those two holes at the lower weights obviously hurt us. We are working and improving as a squad and that is what I have always looked for during the course of the season. While we are still not where we want to be, we are slowly getting there.”
GIRLS:
As programs start to take shape throughout Delaware, you can never be quite sure how many matches you will see, as weight differences between teams can often limit the number of matches. On Wednesday there would be just five matches, but they were all intense and exciting as Milford would earn the win 18-12 as it all came down to the final match.
Things did not start out well for Milford as 8th grader Sophia Daniels was forced to retire due to injury at 114 pounds. Cape would take the next match by fall at 132 pounds. With no margin for error, the Buccaneers would run the table with three consecutive wins by fall. Sophomore Ellie St. Jean 138, 8th grader Zipporah Lewis ,185, and sophomore Payton
Lane at 132 brought home the victory for the Buccaneers.
When asked about the difference between coaching both the boys and girls squads, Parsley was quick to answer.
“There is no difference. This is one team with one mission; to improve every time we hit the mat. We practice as one team and I really think that is working for us. Everyone is learning the same technique and skills, it’s very exciting.”
