Although no one has a crystal ball that will tell them how a new year will go, Downtown Milford Coordinator Sade Truiett sees 2026 as a bright year for Milford businesses.
“Milford’s collaborative spirit is a major strength that can be further leveraged,” Truiett said. “Expanding merchant meetings and creating more opportunities for joint planning among businesses, nonprofits and partner organizations would strengthen alignment and allow us to host more impactful events and initiatives together.”
Truiett feels that residents should pay close attention to the continued growth of small, locally owned businesses and experience-based retail and dining downtown.
“These businesses not only drive foot traffic but also help define Milford’s identity, making downtown a destination rather than just a pass-through,” Truiett said.
What gives Truiett hope is the thriving downtown.
“The steady increase in businesses, community engagement and event attendance shows that Milford has the foundation needed to sustain long-term economic growth rooted in local investment and community pride,” Truiett said.
Like her colleague at the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Milford, Jo Schmeiser, Truiett also sees affordable housing as the biggest issue facing Milford in 2026.
“Housing, particularly affordable housing, needs increased attention,” Truiett said. “Supporting residents who live and work in Milford is essential to maintaining a vibrant downtown and a healthy local economy.”
Truiett believes that downtown Milford will see improvement in the area of affordable housing and that the downtown area will grow over the next year.
“There will be continued growth in restaurants and retail, and even stronger foot traffic, positioning downtown as a true community and economic hub for the city,” Truiett said.
