Halloween is about a week away and for those who may still be struggling with a low-cost, last-minute costume idea, there is hope. One of the best places to find supplies for a good costume is local thrift stores like Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
Find a black dress and a white collard shirt. Put the dress over the shirt pulling the collar out from the neck of the dress. Add black tights, dark lipstick and two braids to become Wednesday Addams.
If you are a cartoon fan, consider a purple dress to go as Daphne from Scooby Doo or an orange sweater and pleated skirt with glasses for Velma. You could even grab a white sweater and blue necktie for Fred. If you are going to a party as a group, consider adding a rumpled pair of bell bottoms and t-shirt to bring Shaggy into the crowd.
Classic costumes are also possible at thrift stores. Rosie the Riveter simply requires a denim shirt with rolled up sleeves and a bandana around the head. A black dress or long black cloak can create the perfect Dracula with vampire teeth and dramatic makeup added.
Look for a loose-fitting button-up shirt, a vest, leggings and fabric to make a sash to be a pirate or a long-sleeved black shirt and pants with white fabric paint to draw the bones and go as a skeleton.
Grab a tropical shirt and cargo shorts, top it with a wide-brim hat, a crossbody fanny pack and a camera. Carry an old map and throw on some oversized sunglasses, head to the party as a tourist. You can also look for a red puffer vest or denim jacket, a plaid shirt and straight-leg jeans for a Marty McFly look. Add white sneakers and a skateboard to make it even more realistic.
If you want to be a standout in your thrift store costume, consider going as Martha Stewart. A button-down shirt that is crisp and clean, tailored pants and an apron. Carry a mixing bowl, whisk or even bring home baked treats to the party. Gardening gear is another staple for Martha, so you could also add a floppy garden hat and wear gardening gloves.
Lumberjack is another easy costume to thrift. A flannel shirt, some suspenders and jeans are all you need to bring off this iconic costume.
No matter what your imagination conjures up for Halloween, thrift stores are one of the best places to find the supplies necessary at a low cost.
