Hitch RV, known for quality service and sales of recreational vehicles, is now Camping World. The company acquired Hitch RV in late 2023 and the changeover was just completed.
“Hitch RV has been proudly serving the Mid-Atlantic region for many years,” Marcus Lemonis, CEO of Camping World, said. “This acquisition brings us into Delaware for the first time, marking the entrance into our 43rd state.”
In 2020, Hitch RV announced the acquisition of Berks Mont Camping Center in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. At the time, this added to three locations Hitch operated in Berlin, New Jersey, Columbia, South Carolina and the Milford location. When the acquisition was announced, Hank Shellenberger, the backbone of Berks Mont, announced his retirement.
“We are pleased to carry the torch going forward of such a great company along with the tradition and values that the Schellenberger family has maintained,” Scott Hayden, then General Manager of Hitch RV said. “The future is very bright for Hitch RV. We have developed the resources to continue to acquire additional locations. Unfortunately, the days of Mom-and-Pop locations are fading away and it’s to the point growth is the only option.”
Camping World was founded in 1966 by David Garvin in Beech Bend Park near Bowling Green, Kentucky. The company launched with Garvin selling RV parts and supplies from the back of his pickup truck in the park campground. An old farmhouse served as company headquarters where a simple, black-and-white catalog was printed and mailed to customer addresses collected at the store and campground.
The first Camping World location opened with four service bays and offices on Beech Bend Road not far from the park. A second store opened in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with the first Florida location opening in Kissimmee between 1973 and 1979. Fourteen more stores would open between 1980 and 1989 with a Mobile RV SuperCenter opening in 1984. The SuperCenter offered products and services at off-site events using a team of crewmembers and service technicians.
In 2017, Camping World acquired Gander Mountain and Overton’s, rebranding Gander Mountain as Gander Outdoors. Today, Camping World has over 210 stores and over 13,000 employees. They also operate Good Sam which was the first comprehensive RV insurance program. They also offer the GoodSamClub.com which helps members plan trips, find events and connect with other members.
