One of the certainties of Spring sports in Delaware is that schedules are subject to change. As a result, Milford had a pair of games to play this week, with neither one of them ending with the Buccaneers on the winning side of the ledger.
On Tuesday, Milford hosted Polytech and found themselves 9-4 losers, despite out hitting the visitors nine to five. Staked to an early 1-0 lead, Milford did not do themselves any favors, committing two errors in the second inning which would see Tech plate three runners. Polytech would score another run in the third, with Milford scoring one in the bottom of the frame.
The score would remain 4-2 until the top of the seventh, when Polytech would take advantage of another pair of Milford miscues, along with allowing three walks as the visitors scored five runs to extend their lead. While Milford tried to come back, scoring two in the bottom of the inning, their effort would come up short. Senior Josh Miller would be the leading hitter for Milford as he collected three hits on the day.
Thursday played out a bit differently for Milford as they traveled to Woodbridge, and while scoring two runs in the first inning, they would lose the game by a score of 5-3. Settling down after allowing the runs in the first inning, Woodbridge senior Connor Watkins found the groove and kept Milford at bay until the game’s final inning.
The Woodbridge offense slowly chipped away, as they collected eight hits on the in the game and entered the final inning with a 5-2 lead. While Milford would get the go ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh, they would come up short. With the pair of losses, Milford finds themselves at 5-5 and looking for answers.
Speaking with Milford coach Matt Faulkner about the week, he shared that much of it was due to mistakes and missed opportunities.
“We had our chances in both games to score runs and we didn’t get the big hit when we needed it. We constantly had runners on base but just couldn’t cash in, we need to get better when it counts.”
Milford will host Saint Andrew’s this Saturday at noon.
