Patricia L. Jopp Bailey passed away peacefully in her home in Milford on August 4, 2026, following a long battle with Progressive Superanuclear Palsy (PSP). Known as Patty, she led a life marked by devotion to family, commitment to her work and a wide array of talents that touched those who knew her.
Born on April 18, 1949, in Harrington, Patty was a proud graduate of the Harrington High School Class of 1967. Her roots in her community ran deep. She worked as an administrative assistant at the Delaware State News before working for the State of Delaware. Over the years, she made several close friends and acquaintances, many of whom remained a part of her life even during the difficulties of the past few years.
Patty found immense joy in creative and nurturing pursuits. She was a gifted quilter, lovingly crafting blankets for her children and grandchildren, a tradition that brought comfort and warmth to those she cherished most. Her talents extended to the kitchen, where she became known for preparing the best apple pie and chocolate chip cookies. Family and friends remember her as an excellent cook and baker, always ready to share her culinary creations.
Patty’s passion for the outdoors was evident in her flourishing gardens. She took great care in growing and canning her own fruits and vegetables, and she found enjoyment in cultivating a vibrant flower garden. An ardent animal lover, Patty’s compassion was especially apparent in the way she cared for her pet cats, who were constant companions in her later years.
Patty is survived by a loving family; her daughter, Michele Peiffer and her husband, Shane; her son, David Hoffner and his fiancée, Michelle; bonus daughters, Susan Esham (Timmy); and Carol Reed (Paul); and her brother Jaems Jopp, Jr. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Zoe Hoffner, Quint Hoffner, Rebekah Peiffer; bonus grandchildren, Adam Reed, Kayla Peterman, Kelsey Snyder and Mackenzie Reed, as well as their spouses, Selena, Joel and Andrew. Patricia also leaves behind a bonus great-grandchild, Isaac Peterman with one more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her former husband and close friend, Oscar Bailey Jr.; her parents, James W. Jopp and Elizabeth Jopp, and her brother, David Jopp.
Special thanks to all of the wonderful caregivers who assisted Patty during her journey with this debilitating disease and allowed her to remain in her home until the end. It would not have been possible without them.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 17 at 2 PM in the chapel of the Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 Northwest Front Street, Milford DE 19963 at 1 PM. Interment is private.
