It may have been a while since you ventured into your dark, damp and dusty basement, but that could be a mistake. Many homeowners discover hidden treasures when they take on that “clean out the basement” project.
“It is not unusual for people who clean out a basement after many years, even decades, to discover things like vintage toys, collectible records and even antique furniture,” experts in the field say. “People tend to overlook things in their own homes, especially if they have been there awhile. There have been homeowners who discovered boxes of baseball cards, mid-century furniture and even first-edition books.”
Take a look in your basement to see if you might have some items of value. Vintage electronics, like early record players, tube radios and even first-generation video game consoles could bring hundreds, even thousands, of dollars if they are still working. Sports memorabilia like old jerseys and ticket stubs can be very valuable as well. Baseball cards are increasingly valuable to collectors, but the most valuable ones are dated prior to the 1980s.
“Vinyl is making a comeback and original pressings of albums by artists like Led Zeppelin, Prince, Michael Jackson or The Beatles can bring a significant amount of money,” experts say. “Vintage hand tools, metal signs and early industrial equipment have become very popular for decorators and restorers.”
See if you have an old trunk or hand-crafted wood furniture which could be of value. Mid-century modern pieces are attractive to collectors right now as well. You may even stumble upon historical artifacts or family heirlooms you did not know you had. It could be a box of war medals that belonged to a grandfather. These may not only have monetary value but a connection to your family’s past.
If your basement is damp, it is important to check the condition of the items you find. Moisture and temperature changes can damage paper, fabric and electronics which could lower value. Before you move your items into the living area, consider having an antique dealer, auction house or online appraisal service review the item.
“Your basement might be more than just storage—it’s a snapshot of another era,” experts say “You never know what stories or surprises you’ll uncover until you start looking.”
With the holidays approaching, you may be heading downstairs to grab the decorations so take a closer look around. The next hidden gem could be sitting quietly in your basement, waiting to be rediscovered.
