Down Syndrome Association of Delaware has an urgent need for volunteers for their upcoming iCan Swim camp taking place July 7-11 at St. Andrew’s School in Middleton, DE.
“iCan Swim makes a powerful impact by helping participants gain independence, safety skills, and joy in the water. Each participant is paired with a dedicated volunteer. This 1:1 support is critical to the camp’s success,” Mary Sweeney, DSA spokesperson, said. “Without enough volunteers, we cannot offer this camp. At this time, 15 volunteers are still needed.”
This life-changing program teaches individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities how to swim and practice water safety in a supportive, fun environment. No prior experience for volunteers is necessary, just a positive attitude, comfort in the water and a willingness to support a swimmer as they gain confidence and skills.
Volunteers must be age 15 or older, and there is no upper age limit. Parents, teachers, college students, and active retirees are all encouraged to join us. A paid, certified lifeguard is also needed to be on-site during all sessions. Those interested in the lifeguard position should contact Jess Walls at [email protected] by July 1.
The camp is held at St. Andrew’s School, 350 Noxontown Rd., Middletown, DE 19709 with session times planned as follows:
- Session 1: 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM
- Session 2: 10:15 AM – 11:15 AM
- Session 3: 11:45 AM – 12:45 PM
- Lunch Break
- Session 4: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
- Session 5: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to attend each day. A short orientation session will be held on Sunday, July 6.
