
The weather is turning warmer, and it is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Killens Pond is enticing everyone to enjoy nature with fun programs planned throughout June.
June 7 at 11 AM, naturalists will lead a Discovery Hike for children aged 5 to 10 with an adult. Children get the opportunity to experience nature hands-on on a hike that is just over a mile long. Pre-registration is required but the hike is free after paying park admission.
Want to learn to fish or have a youngster who does? Join the experts at Killens Pond on June 8 from 10 AM to Noon and learn casting, baiting hooks and reeling one in. Rods are provided but attendees can bring their own. Participants aged 16 to 65 will have to have a Delaware non-tidal fishing license. The cost is $10 per participant and online registration ends 22 hours before the program. After that, call 302-284-4229 to register.
On Saturday, June 14, Killens Pond will offer an evening kayak tour at 7 PM. Be advised that participants will get wet and muddy so closed-toe shoes are required and old clothing is recommended. Previous paddling experience is recommended as you must be comfortable paddling a kayak or canoe. Bring water and a flashlight. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. The cost is $20 per paddler.
A Naturalist Nature Hike is planned on Sunday, June 15 at 11 AM, a 1.2-mile hike with a naturalist who will provide interesting information on the trails. The hike is free with park entry but requires registration.
On June 21 at 11 AM, learn how animals grow up as one of our naturalists provides details on how some of the creatures who call this area home grow up. There is a story and hands-on activity. The program is designed for children 3 to 6 and an adult must be present throughout the program. The cost is $6 per child and registration is required.
Leave it to Beavers is the topic on June 22 at 11 AM as naturalists provide interesting facts about these wood-chewing creatures. On June 28, Fantastic Frogs is the topic at 11 AM where you can learn all about frogs and toads. Then, on June 29 at 11 AM, Know It Owls will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about owls. You can even test your knowledge about these fascinating creatures.
