Due to a scheduling conflict, Second Street Players is seeking a director for its 2025 holiday show, The Homecoming. The current director is willing to support the incoming director for the November/December 2025 production as much as possible to ensure a smooth transition.
Set during the Great Depression, The Homecoming (known on television as The Waltons but here as the Spencers) introduces us to the large family struggling to survive. To make ends meet, the father takes the only job available located a long distance from their Virginia mountain home and has left Clay-Boy, the oldest, responsible to help in the care of his brothers and sisters. As he is reaching manhood, Clay-Boy has a secret dream that’s quite different from his earth-bound community where he lives – he wants to write. His father, a hard-working man,
doesn’t understand this dream of his and considers it foolishness; he wants him to become a responsible man who will build a home and family. Clay-Boy is filled with frustration trying to explain how important his dream is to the man he admires most. But he is also concerned about his father as he is long overdue in getting home. His father does arrive home – just as the family is in despair about him. With his arrival, Clay-Boy’s father gives him a special gift that reveals his unexpected understanding and the strength of a loving family.
Director applications are due by Monday, June 23, 2025. There are two separate applications – one for those applying to direct for the first time at SSP and one for those who have previously directed at SSP. Applications may be downloaded from www.secondstreetplayers.com.
Interviews will be held June 24-27. Notification of director selection will be no later than July 3, 2025. Show dates for the production are November 28, 29, 30 and December 5, 6, 7, 2025. Any questions may be emailed to [email protected] (in the subject line, please note “Questions”).
The Homecoming, adapted by Christopher Sergel and based on the book by Earl Hamner, Jr., is produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing (dramaticpublishing.com).
