Michael Smith, 68, of Portsmouth, Virginia, died in a crash at the intersection of Johnson Road and Dupont Highway, Delaware State Police announced. The crash involved three vehicles on Friday, October 17.
At approximately 2 PM, Smith was driving a Hyundai Sonata northbound on Dupont Boulevard, approaching Johnson Road in Lincoln. A Honda Accord, driven by a 27-year-old man from Milford, was traveling behind Smith as he began to slow down for the yellow or red signal at the intersection. The Honda did not slow down and struck the rear of the Hyundai, pushing it into the intersection and striking the left side of a Freightliner tanker truck that was traveling westbound through the intersection.
Smith was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Honda and the driver of the Freightliner, a 58-year-old man from Dover, were not injured.
The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash.
