Shelby Grant, owner of June Bugs Boutique in Penny Square, has always wanted to operate her own business. She spent time working for her family roofing business before she opened her trendy boutique, the result of a business plan she created in college. After being open for a short time, Grant realized there was still something missing in downtown Milford and soon opened babybugs, also in Penny Square.
“We decided to open babybugs for several reasons,” Grant said. “First, there are no baby store in our area, you either have to drive 30 minutes to the beach or to Dover. The other was that there is a huge demand for baby clothing in our area.”
The official slogan for babybugs is “boho baby boutique,” carrying quality and trendy items but avoiding what Grant describes as “cheesy” items. Their inventory is perfect for last minute baby shower and birthday gifts as they have a little bit of everything for babies, toddlers and small children.
“We carry trendy clothing, shoes, accessories, blankets, books and toys,” Grant said. “Our goal is to add even more products as the business grows.”
Grant explains that stores like this are critical to the success of Milford as there are simply very few retail options in the town. The only place to shop for baby clothing and items in Milford is Walmart or drive 30 minutes to find what is needed for small children.
“There is a huge demand in our area for retail and it is nice to have something this close to home,” Grant said. “The biggest challenge we have had so far is getting the brand out there and letting people know we are here. So many stop in who have no idea we even exist.”
Grant has enjoyed the connections she has made in her journey make her dream of Babybugs a reality.
“We have met so many amazing people in our community and we have been able to help share such special life events with them, everything from gender reveals or gift shopping,” Grant said.
Babybugs is located in Penny Square at 39 North Walnut Street, Suite 106 in Milford. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. You can also find them online.
