The National Weather Service has partnered with the National Safe Boating Council to help promote safe boating practices. During National Safe Boating Week, NWS will send public service announcements on all NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards in an effort to promote safety on the water.
With more boaters on the water than ever before, the National Safe Boating Council is focused on promoting the use of life jackets while boating. One way they plan to do that is “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” during National Safe Boating Week.
On Friday, May 16, boating enthusiasts are encouraged to wear their life jacket to work as a fun way to remind others of the importance of life jackets when boating. Participants are asked to take a photo and post it on social media with the hashtag #wearyourlifejacketatworkday. Be sure to tag the Safe Boating Campaign (@boatingcampaign).
Boaters will be randomly chosen for prizes from the Safe Boating Council throughout the day.
Statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three of every four boating fatalities in 2023 and that 87 percent of those who drowned were not wearing a life jacket. There are many options available for life vests, but boaters should be sure the jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for the water activity they are engaging in and properly fitted.
