On Saturday, November 15 from Noon until 1:45 PM, Milford Public Library will partner with the Music School of Delaware for an interactive event. A” Drumming Workshop and Performance” with Scotty Horey will happen in two parts.
“The two parts are performance and participation,” Mary Jane Vanvestraut, Director of Community Relations with the music school, said. “Dr. Horey will present his exciting solo performances combining classical music, rock, jazz, and Latin, while playing marimba and drums. Shortly after, teens will be guided through rhythm and movement activities, basic instruction on different drums and percussion, all accomplished through shared motivation and teamwork. Questions and a discussion will be encouraged after.”
The program is designed for teens 12 to 18.
“We believe that performing and consuming performances is an integral part of music education! He will perform in a variety of genres, and then participants will be encouraged to take part in percussive activities related to rhythm and movement and have hands on experience with different percussion instruments,” Vanvestraut said. “This workshop is for beginners and experienced percussionists alike – there is something for everyone! Here at The Music School of Delaware, we truly believe that high quality music education should be accessible to people of all ages and abilities.”
Horey is a drummer, solo artist, and teacher who is passionate about both performing and teaching. His work centers around embracing classical music as well as jazz, rock, and Latin music while focusing on youth mentorship, cultural exchange, and health and wellness. For 20 years his acclaimed work has brought him through 13 countries
“The Music School of Delaware offers scholarship programs,” Vanvestraut said. “For our financial assistance, anyone with a household income of less than $150,000 automatically qualifies, and we even have an endowment fund that, if eligible, can cover your first year’s tuition completely.”
This partnership is designed to demonstrate how both the Music School and library are cornerstones of the community. Registration is not required.
The event will be at the Delaware School of Music. Participants may go directly to the Music School or meet at the library 10 minutes before the event and walk over as a group. Please let us know if you need accommodations.
