Milford School District invites all families and community members to a Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, February 17 from 6 to 7 PM. The event will be held in the Milford Middle School Auditorium, located at 612 Lakeview Avenue and is free to attend.
“This program will celebrate black history, culture and excellence while highlighting the voices and talents of Milford students,” Trish Gerken, Public Information Officer, said. “This event is held in partnership with the Milford High School Black Student Union and will feature student performances, reflections and presentations that recognize the many contributions of black leaders, artists and changemakers.”
During the program, Milford School District will take a special moment to honor and recognize the Milford 11, the students who attempted integration of Milford High School in 1954. Attendees will hear a preview reading of the text that will appear on a new historic marker commemorating their legacy, as well as a formal proclamation issued by the Governor recognizing their impact and Milford School District’s ongoing path toward educational equality.
The evening will conclude with performances by the MHS Chamber Choir, The MCA and Milford Middle School Step Teams and additional student contributions that reflect the spirit and significance of Black History Month. This is one of several opportunities throughout February for the Milford community to come together in learning, reflection and appreciation of black history – past, present and future.
“While the February 17 event serves as a moment of tribute and reflection, the district will continue this important recognition of the Milford 11 later in the year,” Gerken said. “An official Rededication Ceremony, including the unveiling of a historic marker, is planned for September 8, 2026, commemorating Milford School District’s ongoing journey toward educational equality.
