The City of Milford Electric Department recently earned the Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA). The designation highlights the city’s commitment to energy efficiency.
“The SEP designation, which runs from December 1, 2025, through November 30, 2028, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate leadership in several areas,” Lauren Swain, Economic Development and Community Engagement Coordinator, said. “These include smart energy program structure, energy efficiency & distributed energy resources, environmental & sustainability initiatives as well as customer experience. Milford joins more than 100 public power utilities nationwide with this distinction, a testament to our team’s hard work and our community’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.”
Erin Miller, Vice President of Programs and Sustainability at American Municipal Power, Inc., and Chair of the SEP Review Panel, presented the designations on November 3 in Huntsville, Alabama during APPA’s annual Customer Connections Conference.
“SEP-designated utilities have demonstrated their leadership in smart energy programs and services,” said Miller. “This designation celebrates utilities that are committed to serving their customers while taking the extra step to plan for the future. Communities served by utilities that have earned the SEP designation should be proud of their utility’s accomplishments.”
Anthony Chipola, Electric Director for the City of Milford, felt that this designation was the result of the hard work of his team.
“Earning the Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation confirms our dedication to serving the City of Milford Electric customers,” Chipola said. “This designation reflects the hard work of our team in implementing forward-thinking programs – from improving grid efficiency and reliability to providing advanced energy options and outstanding community support. We’re proud to be recognized by the APPA for our efforts in delivering safe, reliable, and modern electric service to our community.”
The city was honored to receive the designation.
“We’re honored to be recognized as a utility at the forefront of smart energy innovation,” said Chris Coleman, City Manager of Milford. “We would not be recognized if not for the hard work and dedication of the members of the city’s Electric Department. This SEP designation reflects our commitment to providing affordable power, promoting energy efficiency throughout our community, and reducing our environmental footprint.”
