Milford wrestler Gregroy Locket made history this year with an undefeated season and a win at the state tournament. The heavyweight achieved a record of 42-0 this year, landed him as the number one seed in the state tournament. Greg was able to advance to the finals where he would win in double overtime, competing with a fractured ankle.
“Freshman year was a struggle,” the two-time conference now state champion had to say. “I wrestled for a spot on varsity and had to get used to wrestling bigger and more experienced people. Sophomore year, I’d say I improved the most. I wrestled more people, and I’ve gotten a lot better wrestling better people and coaches, too.”
Lockett earned a third-place title in the state during his sophomore year.
“Junior year, I fought through an injury so had to go heavyweight,” Lockett said. “So, that was a struggle because I had to wrestle even bigger, better opponents. But I also had to wrestle differently. I got a conference championship that year. Senior year is when I did it all. Becoming a two-time conference champion and accomplishing my dreams of being a state champion!”
Assistant Wrestling Coach Jack Del Duca, when asked about Greg’s time at Milford, responded with pride.
“Greg Lockett’s senior season was the definition of what Milford wrestling is all about,” Del Duca said. “Finishing the year 46-0, surpassing 100 career wins, earning his place in the Milford Century Club, and
becoming a two-time conference champion are incredible accomplishments, but what truly defines Greg is his toughness and determination. In the third period of the state championship match, Greg fractured his ankle and, instead of giving in, he continued to battle and finish the match. That moment captured everything Greg has been throughout his years in our program. His relentless work ethic, grit and commitment to getting better every day set the standard in our room.”
Del Duca continued.
“Greg didn’t just leave Milford with a state title and a spot in the Century Club, he left a legacy of toughness and perseverance that future wrestlers in this program will strive to live up to,” he said.
Greg leaves a lasting legacy at Milford and embodies the spirit of a true Buccaneer, leading with tremendous determination, unwavering sportsmanship and setting a standard of excellence that inspires every teammate who follows.
