
May 1 kicked off National Small Business Month, a time to celebrate small businesses and the courage it takes owners to work toward their dream. According to the Delaware Division of Small Business, it is likely everyone knows someone who owns or works at a small business in Delaware.
There are 4,613 small businesses in Kent and 6,271 in Sussex Counties. In addition, small businesses account for 98 percent of all businesses in the state, employing early 240,000 people. Throughout the United States, small businesses create two-thirds of the job growth and 44 percent of the United States economy.
In celebration of Small Business Month, the Delaware Division of Small Business is holding several workshops designed to help those who have a desire to open a business get started as well as assistance to existing businesses.
On May 5, the Delaware Division of Industrial Affairs will offer a Small Business Bootcamp, a free event designed for small business owners as well as those who are thinking about starting a new business. The event will cover workplace laws, compliance, safety tips from experts and more. There will be representatives from state agencies who can provide valuable resources that can help businesses grow. Artificial intelligence is the subject of a workshop on May 6. The first webinar, Basics of AI & Intro to Concepts, is planned for 9:00 to 10:30 AM with a second in-person workshop at the FinTech Innovation Hub from 12:30 to 3 PM. Registration can be completed online for both workshops.
Want to learn how to pitch to investors? An in-person workshop at the New Castle County Emerging Enterprise Center, 920 Justison Street in Wilmington, on May 7 at 9 AM will provide insight into the process of constructing a pitch, tailoring the pitch to particular audiences and ways to create a clear and compelling message. Thinking about starting a business? The How to Start a Business webinar, planned for Thursday May 8, could provide you with the tools you need to bring that dream to reality. The event is from 2 to 4:30 PM and attendees will learn about business licenses, insurance, forms of businesses, funding, business plans and more. Zoom registration is required.
