The loss of a family member has prompted a GoFundMe to not only to assist with burial costs and to support a 14-year-old who has lost a father, but also to bring attention to the reality of addiction. Colby Neibert, whose brother passed away over the weekend, wants to be sure his nephew, Nick, who is more like a son, see his father one more time.
“May of you have seen our nephew, who truly is our son, Nick, around the bakery over the years, running around as a little kid, helping at events or selling candies in the hallways back in the day,” Angie Robles, co-owner of My Sister’s Fault, posted on social media. “My husband, Colby, and I have helped raise Nick since he was a baby. His dad, Colby’s brother, struggled with addiction and illness for many years. Sadly, this weekend, drugs took his life. We’re sharing this not for sympathy, but as a painful reminder that addiction is real and it destroys families. We’ve seen its effects cup close for years and now we’re seeing the heartbreak of its final toll.”
Neibert’s description of the need for the GoFundMe was heart wrenching.
“I’m creating this fundraiser to help with the funeral expenses for my brother – a loving father, son and brother, who we lost far too soon,” the post reads. “He struggled with addiction, and after finding out our mother was battling cancer, he had a mental health breakdown that led to a relapse and fatal overdose. Addiction is a disease, not a choice, and behind it was a man with a big heart, a great sense of humor and deep love for his son.”
According to Neibert, his brother was doing better and was trying, but the pain became too much.
“Now, we’re trying to give him the peaceful goodbye he deserves and to help his 14-year-old son who is left without his dad,” Neibert said. “We know times are hard for many people, but if you are able to help, with anything, we’d be deeply grateful. Every donation goes toward funeral costs, and anything left will be used to support his son through his loss. Even if you can’t donate, sharing this would mean the world.”
Many who commented on the post sharing the GoFundMe demonstrated how prevalent substance abuse is.
“As a mother of two who are in recovery my heart goes out to his son,” Angel Marie commented. “I am one of that has a better ending and it makes me so sad that a child will endure this pain. Praying for healing of his heart and those who will help him through this difficult journey without a father.”
Linda Carey Browning stated that she lost a son to addiction who left behind two young boys so she understands how difficult this will be for Neibert’s nephew. Rachel Richardson commented that she had also lost a brother to addiction. Many others expressed gratitude that Neibert’s nephew had a loving family to surround him.
I’m so very, very saddened to hear this news. Very heartbreaking,” Sandie Katz said. “Thank the good Lord that you have raised Nick to be an amazing young man. Sending love and prayers for you all.”
