Cynthia Lou Hopkins Garrett of Houston passed away on October 7, 2025, following a courageous battle against cancer. She was 69.
Garrett was born November 16, 1955, in Easton, Maryland, the daughter of Lloyd Perry Hopkins and Margaret “Peggy” Leight Hopkins. She graduated from Colonel Richardson High School and spent her adult life as a devoted homemaker, taking care of her four daughters and husband, providing them with a loving home. Her family was the center of her world.
When she was younger, Garrett spent as much time as possible outdoors and rode her horse, Little Bit, all over. She often referred to those days as free and joyful, showing her adventurous and spirited side.
For many years, Garrett helped her husband, Sonny, raise bees. In the early days of their beekeeping business, the couple made honey-flavored ice cream which they sold at the Delaware State Fair. The ice cream was so popular, it often sold out before noon. In addition to beekeeping, Garrett loved every creature that wandered through her yard, from deer, to turkeys and anything else that moved.
An avid gardener, Garrett loved her flowers, especially irises. During her younger years, Garrett tried to collect every color of iris she could, filling her yard with every shade imaginable. The only thing that matched her love of nature was her competitive nature at the card table. Anyone who played cards with her knew better than to underestimate her and she loved going head-to-head with her grandchildren, usually winning the game.
Garrett was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her devoted husband of 31 years, William Daniel “Sonny” Garrett; her loving children, Heather Pellrin of Illinois; Mandy Wilson and her husband Brent of Maryland; April Mignogno and her husband, Michael, of Maryland; and Amber Passwaters and her husband, Allan, of Delaware. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren Hannah, Chase, Leah, Alexis, Taylor, Riley, Mason, Emily and Hope as well as a great-grandchild, Silas. Her siblings Sandy Reynolds of Frederica; Trish Hopkins of East New Market, Maryland; Stephanie Milligan and her husband, Art, of Denton, Maryland; Claudia Eck and her husband, Bob, of Wyoming, DE; Stanley Hopkins of Preston, Maryland; and March Larmore and her husband, Tim, of Preston, Maryland, also survive her.
Services will be private with cremation and burial at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery where her name will be honored on the Memorial Wall. A family dinner celebrating her life will be held at a later date.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Garrett’s memory
