While many look at the cold months of January and February as a time to hunker down and stay warm, many home improvement experts say these are the best months to complete those home improvement projects. The holidays are over and the time indoors is a great way to get your house ready for spring.
“People think of spring as project season, but winter is when you can really plan and get ahead,” Mark Reynolds, a local contractor, said. “January and February give homeowners breathing room before everyone gets busy again.”
One of the biggest advantages of doing those indoor projects in the winter is time. There are fewer outdoor activities or social commitments, so it is easier to focus on your living space. When people are busy, they tend to postpone things like organizing or refreshing rooms.
“Winter is when families are actually home together,” Reynolds said. “That makes it a great time to declutter and create a more functional home. This is also when we have more availability as it is harder to do work outside. That can mean cost savings for you as well.”
The winter months are the perfect time for painting, updating flooring, changing lighting or small renovations like shelving. Because temperatures are more stable inside the home in the winter, paint dries faster. Because windows and doors remain closed, there is less risk of dust or pollen getting into wet paint as well.
“This is also a great time to make your home more energy efficient,” Reynolds said. “Now is when you will feel drafts, so you know where to focus your efforts.”
Because many look at January as a way to refresh, it can be uplifting to tackle a home improvement project you have been putting off.
“There’s something empowering about starting the new year with a home that feels calmer and more functional,” Reynolds said. “Small improvements can make a big difference. Completing indoor projects now frees up time for outdoor projects when the weather is nicer.”
With fewer distractions and the availability of family when the weather is cold, it is the perfect time to consider that home improvement project you have been putting off.
