Bayhealth recently provided high school students with a hands-on learning experience with Intuitive Laboratory robotic bronchoscopy. The experience was through Intuitive’s Thoracic Mobile Experience Truck.
The ion system, in use at Bayhealth, represents a significant advancement in the early detection of lung cancer. Physicians are able to reach and biopsy small, hard-to-access nodules with remarkable precision. This helps them identify cancers at the earliest, most treatable stage.
“Watching students engage with this technology was truly inspiring,” Bayhealth Oncology Service Line Senior Director and Bayhealth Cancer Institute Executive Director John Shavock, ACHE, FACMPE, said. “It’s our hope that today’s experience sparks a lasting interest in healthcare and shows these young people that they can build meaningful, rewarding careers right here in Delaware.”
Students learned how Bayhealth clinicians use these tools to save lives, and interacted with physicians, surgeons and respiratory care experts who shared who innovation and compassion come together in modern medicine.
According to Bayhealth officials, the Ion complements the DaVinci robotic surgery program, enabling surgeons to perform minimally invasive proceures with greater precision and faster recovery times.
The event is a reflection of Bayhealth’s commitment to growing the next generation of caregivers by creating opportunities for students to experience firsthand the future of healthcare. Bayhealth is helping to strengthen Delaware’s healthcare workforce and ensure patients continue receiving high quality care close to home. It is the goal of Bayhealth to connect young people with real world practice.
In addition to the student event, Bayhealth also held one for donors, team members, physicians and community partners. Visit Bayhealth online to learn more about the lifesaving technology now available.
