Milford Advocacy for the Homeless will hold a Helping Hand event on Saturday, October 4 from 10 AM to 12 Noon at the Milford Public Library. The event is designed to provide resources for those who are experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity or other challenges.
“This is a community-centered outreach event that brings together local partners, volunteers and community members in one space to provide practical resources, encouragement and connections,” Ruth Houston-Behrens, MAH Corporate Secretary, said. “Guests will have access to free clothing, hygiene items, non-perishable food and other daily essentials.”
In addition to those items, Houston-Behrens stated that partner organizations will be on hand to share information about housing, healthcare, employment and transportation resources. She advised the goal was not to just provide immediate relief but also to connect people with the long-term support systems in the area.
“This idea grew out of the mission of MAH which is ‘with loving kindness, human dignity and walking beside those who matter most.’ We saw a gap in how individuals experiencing homelessness or financial hardship could access resources all in one place,” Houston-Behrens said. “Helping Hands was designed to be that bridge – meeting people where they are with dignity and compassion, while making it easier for them to connect with the help they need.”
Houston-Behrens feels that this type of event shows that Milford takes care of their own. She stated that by reducing barriers to resources, Helping Hands helps neighbors get back on their feet more quickly. She also feels that it fosters collaboration among local organizations, churches and volunteers, building a stronger safety net for the future.
“Community support is vital to making this event possible,” Houston-Behrens said. “We are accepting donations of hygiene items, new socks and undergarments, gently used clothing and non-perishable foods. Sponsorships and financial contributions are also welcome and will go directly toward event supplies and ongoing outreach efforts.”
Lunch will also be provided at the event. Anyone interested in donating or partnering with MAH can visit their website, send an email or call 302-217-3106.
