Back on May 8th, the Milford Girls Lacrosse team hosted a Saint Mark’s team in a game which saw Milford not at their best. Following the 14-9 defeat, there were three games remaining and Milford chose to learn from their experience and that tough defeat. The Bucs would go on a three-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 59-13. As a result, Milford garnered the 10th seed in the DIAA State Tournament which begins on Friday.
Milford will be hosting 15th seed Saint Andrew’s this Friday at 4:30 pm. It was a point of emphasis for Milford to finish strong and be at their best for the tournament. We reached out to coach Megan Fry to ask a few questions, and one of them covered the resolve that came out of the St. Mark’s game.
“After taking a tough loss to St. Marks, it was important for our girls to come out big the last three games to help build our momentum, boost team confidence and overall get us back working as a team before heading into state tournament,” Fry said.
Milford girls lacrosse has continued to have a steady growth, but getting focused and ready for the tournament has been the key focus for Fry.
“Our team is incredibly excited and ready for this moment. Making the state tournament has been a goal we’ve worked toward all season, and it’s an amazing feeling to see our hard work pay off,” Fry said. “They’ve had great energy at practice, and everyone is locked in and focused. We know the competition will be tough, but we’ve been preparing both mentally and physically, and we’re ready to give it everything we’ve got. This is a special opportunity, and we’re determined to make the most of it.”
The Bucs know performing well in the tournament is very important for them, they also know that they will have their hands full against a gritty St. Andrew’s team.
“I expect the opposing team to come in prepared, competitive, and hungry for a win just like we are,” stated Fry. “At this level, everyone has worked hard to get here, so I’m anticipating a tough match with a lot of intensity. We’re focused on staying disciplined, sticking to our game plan, and matching their energy from the start of the game.”
With girls lacrosse growing throughout Delaware, making the tournament is a big step for the program.
“This is extremely important for this program because this is the first time in program history that we have made the tournament,” said Fry. “This sets a tone for upcoming years that we are capable of achieving great things and hopefully will help build this program even more. I think this is also a reflection on how hard the girls have worked over the years and shows their determination to improve each day.”
While this may look like just a small step in the evolution of Milford Lacrosse, it is an important one. Something that should be celebrated by both the team and the community. So come out and cheer on our Bucs as they make history in their first ever tournament game.
