DuPont Nature Center, located at the end of Lighthouse Road at the mouth of the Mispillion River where it empties into the Delaware Bay, offers many programs throughout July. All events are free and even the children’s programs provide information adults may not know.
On Saturday, July 5, celebrate National Clean Beaches Week by assisting with a cleanup on Slaughter Beach, starting at 9 AM. During the cleanup, DuPont Nature Center naturalists will provide insight into how trash and pollution impact the coastline. Anyone interested should meet at the Slaughter Beach pavilion at 359 Bay Avenue in Slaughter Beach.
Also, on July 5 and again on July 19, the center will offer Storybook Saturday at 11 AM. Children will hear a story related to life near the water read by a naturalist. After the story, children participate in a fun activity that will be enjoyed by adults as well. Later that day, at 1 PM, visitors of all ages can participate in feeding time where aquatic animals are fed. This program provides insight into some of the characteristics of the animals that live near the nature center. All ages are welcome to help feed horseshoe crabs, turtles, fish and others.
Feeding time at the DuPont Nature Center is also offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1 PM.
On Saturday, July 12 at 2:30 PM, learn more about some of the most misunderstood marine animals during a program called “Sharks! Friends Not Foes.” The program, which is free, provides insight into the characteristics of sharks and explains the various species of sharks. During the program, naturalists will dispel myths about these beautiful creatures. All ages are welcome.
Beachcombing with DuPont Nature Center Naturalists is planned for July 16 at 9 AM. Meet at the Slaughter Beach pavilion to walk the shoreline with a naturalist where you will learn about the different objects you may find as well as evidence of some of the marine animals that call Slaughter Beach home. This event is also offered on July 30.
On July 19 at 2:30 PM, a naturalist will provide details on what lived in shells that can be found along the shoreline.
Meet at the Marvel Drive Parking Lot in Slaughter Beach, located at the Bay Avenue and Marvel Drive on Saturday, July 26 at 9 AM for seining. Staff at the nature center will guide you as you explore the shallows of the bay to catch and learn more about the animals that live in the waters. This event requires preregistration.
