The holiday season is upon us and although it should be a time of happiness and cheer, criminals can cause your holiday to be less bright. By taking a few extra precautions, you can help the holidays for you and your family be safe and happy.
“Try shopping during the day, but if you must shop at night, do not do it alone,” a spokesperson for Delaware State Police said. “Parking lots are an easy place to fall victim to a crime. Be sure to park in a safe, well-lit location.”
Always lock car doors and secure valuables in a place where they cannot be seen outside the vehicle. When walking to and from your vehicle, stay alert to surroundings. Watch for possible suspicious behavior, as well as vehicles or situations that seem “off.” If you see something that seems suspicious, report it when you get inside the building.
“You can report any suspicious activity to a customer service desk or a receptionist,” Delaware State Police advised. “Just give them a description of the person and vehicle, why it seemed unusual and let them handle it from there. Stores have security who can investigate.”
Women carrying purses should be extra cautious as they are prime targets for criminals in crowded locations. If possible, where your purse strap across your body, not just on one shoulder. If you use a backpack, turn the straps around so the zippers are against your back rather than facing away from you or wear the pack on the front of your body.
Leave your expensive jewelry at home and tuck extra cash in different locations in your pocket, wallet or purse so that you don’t pull a large wad of cash out to pay for a purchase. Beware of any stranger who approaches as con-artists use a variety of methods to distract you in order to take belongings or to entice you to donate money to them for a cause that may not exist. Thieves sometimes work in teams, so while one is talking to you, another can remove items from shopping bags or purses.
“Avoid being distracted by your cell phone and other electronic devices,” the spokesperson said. “Not only does this make you a target for criminals, it is not safe for you or others if you are walking and texting.”
