Delaware Hospice will kick off the first of two of their Camp New Hope on Friday, June 20. The camps are designed to give children and teens a chance to work through their grief and loss with peers and counselors.
Due to popular demand, this year’s camps will be held at two locations. The first will be June 20 and 21 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Wilmington. The second is planned for July 25 and 26 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Milford. The camp is open to children and teens aged 6 to 17 who are coping with the loss of a loved one.
Delaware Hospice reports that 92 percent of the children who attend the camp are glad they attended, and 72 percent felt they were better able to handle their feelings after the camp. After camp, three times as many who attended felt that there were others out there who understood how they felt.
Traditional camp activities are offered along with crafts, water games, and sports. The camp is designed to give children the chance to work through grief and loss with others who are dealing with the same emotions. The camp is free of charge and includes lunch as well as snacks.
All activities at camp allow children the opportunity to interact with others who have experienced loss. They include group projects, individual support, education and free time to allow children to process emotions and ask questions.
At the end of the camp, there is a memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of each child’s loved one. All camp directors are nationally recognized Moyer Foundation Grief Camp Counselors and are highly sought after for their expertise.
