One week before the DIAA Individual State Wrestling Championships, the Milford Buccaneers put on a solid showing at the Henlopen Qualifier’s. Taking place over two days at Sussex Central, senior Greg Lockett would earn the title in the heavyweight class, while fellow senior Avondale Dallas would stand on top of the podium at 165 pounds.
“It was great to see those two earn the Henlopen Championships in their weight classes. Like all good wrestlers, they bring it every practice and every match,” Coach Don Parsley said.
As a result of their wins, the pair punched automatic qualifying tickets to the DIAA Championships being held at Cape Henlopen this Friday and Saturday. Lockett and McElwee weren’t the only automatic qualifiers for the Bucs, as freshman Ryan Farissier would finish second at 106 pounds after losing in his title match. Other automatic qualifiers for Milford included sophomore Ryan Collingsworth who finished third at 215 pounds and sophomore Riley Carmean put in a solid showing with a fourth-place finish at 175.
“These are guys that have continued to improve as the season progressed. They did a great job for our team this year and I am looking forward to seeing how they do this weekend.” Parsley stated.
In addition to the automatic qualifier’s, Milford also received multiple at large bids. Freshman Herman Littleton will be wrestling at 113, junior Dan McElwee will be at 132, freshman Dometrius Dorell at 138 and sophomore Wyatt Simmons at 157. With a total of seven wrestlers, Milford will be well represented this weekend.
“It’s very nice to see these younger guys make the tournament, it is a building block for their futures in the sport. The idea behind wrestling is about testing yourself and by participating in this tournament, these young men will be better served for it.” Parsley concluded.
