Bowers Fire Company lost lifetime member Charles Garfield Glenn III at the age of 82 on August 4. Glenn served for 50 years as a volunteer for the company.
Born June 20, 1943, in Wildwood, New Jersey, Glenn graduated from Wildwood High School in 1964, moving to Delaware shortly after where he married his wife, Joyce, in 1965. Glenn retired from a long, faithful career at Southern States in Milford, later working for MGS before retiring completely. Even after retirement, Glenn worked seasonally at Killen’s Pond State Park, trimming grass and fulfilling his spirit. His family said that Glenn “loved to work.”
With a mischievous streak that brought laugher and joy to all around him, Glenn was passionate about antique cars, taking his 1966 Oldsmobile 442 to car shows. He was a faithful member of Frederica Trinity United Methodist Church for 32 years, serving on the board and helping the congregation in countless ways.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce Walls Glenn; their daughter, Alberta Johnston and her husband, Jerry; two granddaughters, Adrianne Shane and her husband, Steve; Brooke Starke and her husband, Dale. He was the proud great-grandfather of Landon Shane, Adalyn Starke, Aiden Starke and was joyfully awaiting the arrival of baby Maddox Shane this fall. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marilyn Glenn and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Garfield Glenn, Jr. and Edna Glenn along with his brother, Clifton G. Glenn.
Joyce extended a heartfelt thanks to Steve and Adrianne for opening their home to them three years ago and providing loving care for her husband in his final days. Special thanks to Marie Palmer who began as his home physical therapist and quickly became like family as well as Nurse Colleen for the excellent and compassionate care she provided to Joyce and Charles during his recent hospital stay.
“Charles’ legacy of faith, service, love and a side of ornery will be dearly remembered by all who knew and loved him,” his obituary read.
Funeral services are planned for Monday, August 11, 2025. A viewing will take place from 11 AM to 12 Noon followed by a funeral service at noon at Berry-Short Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Barrett’s Chapel Cemetery and a luncheon will be held afterward at South Bowers Fire Department.
