Second Street Players recently announced that auditions will be held for their summer musical on Friday, April 4 and Saturday April 5 at 6 PM in the Riverfront Theatre. This year’s production is “The Secret Garden.”
Directed by John Hulse and David Button, the play is performed by a cast of 25 actors from the ages of 10 and up. The performance will showcase the enchanting children’s classic reimagined in a musical style composed by Lucy Simon and playwright Marsha Norman.
“The play weaves the tale of Mary Lennox, orphaned in India at 10, who returns to Yorkshire to live with her Uncle Archibald, a bitter man, and his disabled son, Colin,” Tracy Dissinger, President of Second Street Players, said. “It is on his estate that Mary finds a magical garden that beckons she and Colin with spirits from Mary’s past and haunting melodies that help guide her in her new life. It is a story of forgiveness and renewal.”
Auditioners should prepare one minute of a familiar musical theater song that best showcases them in a style from the play. All are encouraged to bring a second selection as a backup for their audition song. Sheet music must also be brought to the audition in their key for the accompanist. Auditioners may also sing with an accompaniment-only music track with no vocals on CD or Bluetooth device. They will also be required to read from the script.
Special preference may be given to those who are available for the entire rehearsal period which begins Tuesday, April 15. From Sunday to Thursday, July 6 through 10, cast members must be available for technical rehearsals as well as all performances. The play is scheduled to perform July 11, 12, 13 and July 18, 19 and 20. Those interested can find character descriptions by visiting the Second Street Players website.
