
Tahrie Calloway, 22, of Claymont, was arrested for the July 26 hit-and-run death of Sylvester Person, 67, of Milford. Person was riding a bicycle when he was struck and killed.
The crash occurred on Sand Hill Road, approaching Burton Road, in Milton at approximately 7:39 AM. A 2017 Honda Accord, driven by Calloway, was traveling northbound while Person was riding on the eastern edge of the roadway also travelling northbound. A preliminary investigation revealed that the right front of the Honda struck the bicyclist as it passed, throwing Persons into the grass. The Honda did not stop after the collision but fled from the scene.
Person was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
EMS personnel discovered Calloway and the disabled Honda approximately one mile north of the collision. Troopers learned through investigation that the damage to the Honda was consistent with the hit-and-run collision. They took Calloway into custody without incident.
During the investigation, troopers observed multiple signs of impairment in Calloway, including the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Impairment is suspected as the cause of the crash which is still under investigation.
Calloway was taken to Troop 4 where he was charged with vehicular homicide, second degree, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, tampering with physical evidence, driving under the influence and inattentive driving. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $18,101 cash bond.
The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. They are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Senior Corporal J.
