Led at Milford High School by history teacher Shae Parks, Milford School District joined districts across the country celebrating Civic Learning Week. This is a non-partisan event that highlights the importance of civic education and strengthens efforts to empower communities across the country.
“Civic education is essential in preparing individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to actively participate in our self-governing society,” Trish Gerken, Public Information Officer, said. “As we approach the 250th anniversary of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, this moment serves as a unique opportunity to emphasize the role of civic education in shaping the future of our nation.”
Throughout the week of March 10 through 14, students and staff participated in themed days, including “Many Voices, One Nation,” “Technology and Civics,” “Community Connections,” “Talking Politically,” and “Get Out the Vote!”
“As we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary, the need for high-quality civic education is clearer than ever,” Parks said. “Our students must be prepared to take on their roles as informed and engaged citizens.”
Activities featured civic trivia with prizes, interactive lunch sessions, discussion boards in Schoology grade groups and a voter registration drive for juniors and seniors to wrap up the week.
The celebration was not limited to the high school. Fifth grade students completed their Civil Rights project, deepening their understanding of historical and social movements. Kindergartners in Savannah Moore and Ashley Beisaw’s class explored the essential roles within a community. Students built models of their community and shared with classmates the significance of various places and professions. Through research, storytelling and peer discussions, they gained a deeper appreciation of how communities’ function.
“Civic learning extends far beyond the classroom,” Gerken said. “It is a lifelong journey that shapes every aspect of society. Civic Learning Week underscores the importance of prioritizing civic education across the country, ensuring that students develop the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to sustain and strengthen democracy I the United States.’
