Milford Museum recently presented the Milford Veterans of Foreign War Post 6483 a print of “Armistice Day 1918.”
Armistice Day, commemorated now on November 11, marks the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany in 1918. The ceasefire took place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, ending major hostilities on the western front.
The first celebration of Armistice Day was declared by President Woodrow Wilson in November 1919 with parades and a temporary suspension of business. It became a legal holiday in 1938 and was renamed Veteran’s Day in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.
The print donated to the VFW is a drawing based on a photograph taken during the November 11, 1918, Armistice Day Street fair and parade along Walnut Street, celebrating the end of World War I. On sign that can be seen in the drawing reads “The Kaiser and his hellish brood have fled to Holland!”
