The Milford Senior Center has participated in some way during the Riverwalk Freedom Festival for many years, but this year they decided to turn the Crystal Room over to pirates and wenches. The Lantern Tavern will be open serving mimosas, Bloody Mary’s along with local brews and ciders from the Mispillion River Brewing Company at a cash bar.
“We have participated in the Riverwalk Freedom Festival for many years, but in 2022, we decided the best way to show the community what we do at Milford Senior Center is to open the building to the public, offering activities, arts and crafts as well as tours,” Amy Waltz, Executive Director of the center, said. “We thought this would be a fun way to bring people into the center while offering them a break from the elements and have some fun.”
The Sussex County Shanty Singers will be performing and there will be a Trunk Show provided by the Sons of the American Revolution. The Thrift Shop will be open and they will be serving the center’s famous crab cake platters along with an affordable hot dog meal for kids. Southern Delaware Hot Rod Association will host a car show in the parking lot.
“Service will be provided by our colonial wenches who will also be giving tours of our semi -quincentennial mural,” Waltz said. “We will also be selling raffle tickets for a wooden rocking horse and quilt. The funds raised will be used to support our efforts to bring activities to seniors in the community.”
Kids will also enjoy the Lulu the Ladybug coloring sheet that they can complete while parents are enjoying the tavern. Events like this keep the center running while also allowing them to keep membership dues at a low $25 per person.
Tickets are not being sold for the event and anyone who wants to take part in the festivities can simply stop in at the center during the festival on September 19 from 9 AM to 2 PM.
